Boats, Blogs,Uncle Brad and Im not flattered.

Posted on 13. Dec, 2008 by Rich Lazzara in LSX75, Lazzara Yachts

I got an email yesterday with pictures of a new boat that looks exactly (read copy) like our LSX75.  It reminded me of the first time I tried to start this blog. It was 2004 and I was about two weeks into it and a big company released a rendering of their newest boat that looked identical to our 80 motoryacht.  I posted a profile picture of their rendering next to a real picture of our boat and titled it ” Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but Im not flattered”.   The post was basically about how they needed to get some creativity and stop copying. Not long after that post my Uncle Brad walked into my office and gave me a mouth full.  If you haven’t met Brad, his demeanor is very calm, very methodical.  He is the oldest of the Lazzara’s in the business and no doubt the wisest.  So for him to come into my office and object so harshly to that post and to the responsibility of blogging in general, I knew I was wrong. I shut down my blog a couple days after that.  Fast forward 4 years and I’ve learned a lot.  I started the blog back up and this time around I’ll be posting smarter ;)  No pictures and no names mentioned, you guys are smart enough to figure out who’s imitating us and now you’ll know, Im not flattered.

  1. [...] With the announcement that the new LMC76 will come with three Zeus pod drives the question I am most frequently asked is, “Why did you switch from Volvo IPS?”  The answer is we didn’t .  We are still using the Volovo IPS I and II systems in our LSX line of yachts.  In fact our LSX92 is still the only boat in the world to have the IPSII system and up until someone copied our LSX75, it was the only quad IPS I yacht (side note: If you missed my opinion on copying the LSX75 you can read it here).  [...]

Be happy, to have a copy of your product means that you are the original, a product not worth copying is not a success only when someone copy it, its recognized as a original.
Now you can add the picture of the original and the copy and let everyone know you are the original and wish the copycat good luck they will never be as good as the original thats the nature of creating something by you self vs. only be able to copy others work.

    Garman,

This is true and to a certain extent I agree with you. Still makes it hard to see. Thx for comments.

I have to say, from what I’ve seen of the copy, the Lazzara is far more beautiful. Don’t worry, nobody will forget that the Lazzara was first, and still is better. The idea of quad IPS drives was yours and it will be remembered that way.

On the other hand, congratulations on creating an entirely new type of yacht. It is bittersweet that a copy was made. And you have every right to be angry, you have created the future of yachting, and other companies are struggling to compete with you.

I’ll always remember who came first.

David, Thanks for the kind words. I agree that no one will forget who was first. I also agree that the copy is far from a Lazzara. Having seen it in person and watched how the public has reacted to it, in terms of sales, I wouldnt say Im angry anymore ;)
