Predicition – Yacht sales will increase 25% in 2009
Posted on 05. Jan, 2009 by Rich Lazzara in Lazzara Yachts
Bet you don’t see that prediction these days. Why not? How about more:
1) Record attendance at the 5 major boat shows around the world
2) Record sales at the 5 major boat shows around the world
3) Dealer inventory at an all time low while production is at its highest
4) Record profits for yachting industry
5) More first time boaters than any year on record
Most people reading this will think that I’m an idiot. That’s fine, predictions are useless. Meaningless shots in the dark that really have no value. Scour the web for 2009 predictions and you will find thousands. Why? So the writer can tell everyone how great they were at predicting once 2010 roles around. I apologize if I’m being too harsh on those making all the predictions . The point I want to make is that you cant predict change. You can guess but that’s about it. The boating industry is truly a global industry with yachts being built and purchased in countries all around the world. To many outside forces converge to affect our industry one way or the other. Couple the dynamics of that diversity with the blindingly fast pace at which information flows around the world and you have a recipe for continual change. If your constantly looking around, reading the latest reports, glued to the Dow Jones or keeping up with the value of the dollar you may just get distracted from what you need to be doing. In times like these there is one word that you need to keep in mind, F.O.C.U.S.
Here is what we’ll be doing at Lazzara Yachts:
Fast – Our decisions, techniques, ideas, projects, everything we do will be done with a sense of urgency and at a pace faster than our competition
Overhead – Reduce it, period. We will be more efficient and do more with less.
Creative – We will introduce new products, new marketing ideas and new customer support programs.
Unknown – Be prepared for things to happen that are out of our control, the unknown. We do this by being lean, having a pulse on our industry and an open mind to move in new directions faster than our competition.
Simplify – Production techniques, design ideas, business processes, communication, anything that can be made more efficient with less waste, should be.
Just focus in 2009 and everything will be fine.

I totally agree. In running my business before I retired, I always tried to focus on the in-house efforts, plans, strategies, designs, and goals. You do need to keep one eye open to the outside world and your competition. However,I think the failings come when one spends so much time focusing on the world around you and your competition, that the distractions can prove so great, you lose your ground. I have known several CEOs who are so obsessed with their competition and the global climate/marketplace, they forget to worry about their own employees, their own goals, their own ability to streamline, downsize, maximum potential, etc etc.
If you look at the banking industry or even the vegas casinos today – the CEOs were obsessed with growth — at every expensive. The “big egos” just pushed and pushed for “bigger” and “more” to the point where they are collapsing their companies in the quest for the next ‘grand opening” or “branch” or “overseas xyz”. Now, they the companies are worth a shadow of their former selves, left with little money to fund their own objectives and keep their employees happy. If they had just worried about themselves and not what ‘the other guy’ was doing, these companies would not be scrambling today.
Distraction and ego will bring a company down every time.
It’s good to hear that your company is aware of that and is focusing on running your company to the best of its ability – keeping an eye on the competition – but dancing to your own tune.

Marc,
Thanks for the input. Best quote “Distraction and ego will bring a company down every time.” So true. On a side note I will have some pics of crew quarters posted this evening.
